North Carolina UMPJE study guide

Which law exam North Carolina uses

North Carolina no longer offers a state-specific MPJE. Since April 1, 2026, the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy requires the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) for pharmacist licensure [S1][S2]. The last North Carolina MPJE was given March 31, 2026; a passing North Carolina MPJE earned on or before that date does not have to be repeated as the UMPJE [S1]. Licensed pharmacists transferring into North Carolina must also pass the UMPJE and file an Electronic Licensure Transfer Program application [S1][S2].

Because the UMPJE tests principles common to most states rather than North Carolina-specific rules [S3], the Board points both new graduates and transfer applicants to its Guide to North Carolina Specific Pharmacy Regulation for New Licensees [S1], and its January 2026 newsletter says applicants will complete an online, on-demand North Carolina regulation module [S4]. Study the UMPJE content outline for the exam, then use the Board's guide for the North Carolina rules you will practice under.

North Carolina rules worth knowing on day one

  • Technician supervision (G.S. 90-85.15A). A pharmacist may supervise two pharmacy technicians by default. Going beyond two needs written Board approval, and every technician beyond two must be certified [S5].
  • Technician registration. Noncertified technicians register within 30 days of finishing the pharmacist-manager's training program, and registration renews annually [S5]. The pharmacist-manager notifies the Board within 21 days after a technician starts [S5].
  • Controlled substance reporting (G.S. 90-113.73). Dispensers report each controlled substance prescription to the NC Controlled Substances Reporting System no later than the close of the next business day after delivery, and are encouraged to report within 24 hours [S6].
  • Continuing education (21 NCAC 46 .2201). 15 hours a year. At least 5 must be contact programs, meaning live programs where you can talk back and forth with the presenter. Up to 5 surplus hours can carry forward to the next year [S7].
