Texas pharmacy-law study guide

Prepare a Texas pharmacy-law review plan using the licensing board's current rules. Focus on pharmacy licensing, prescription dispensing, scope of practice. The $99 purchase covers Texas law only, without Federal law. Choose $125 for one state + Federal, or $180 for two distinct eligible states without Federal, subject to availability. Existing buyers retain their previously granted Federal access. Review Federal requirements separately and confirm which examination and licensing pathway applies to you.

Which law exam Texas uses

Texas licensure needs passing scores on both the NAPLEX and the MPJE [S1]. The Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) gives NABP's MPJE as its Texas Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam. Every question on the Texas version applies to Texas practice, and the exam covers both federal and Texas law [S2]. One exam tip from TSBP itself: where Texas and federal law conflict, answer according to the more stringent statute or rule [S2]. TSBP has also announced an "Early MPJE," coming soon, for Texas students who have finished their didactic law coursework and are seeking Texas licensure [S1]. Texas is not on NABP's UMPJE list as of 10/21/2026 [S3].

Texas rules worth studying

  • Community (Class A) pharmacy ratio, 1:6 with a trainee cap (22 TAC 291.32(d)(3)). In a Class A pharmacy, each on-site pharmacist may have up to six technicians and trainees, with no more than three of them trainees. The pharmacist-to-trainee ratio may not exceed 1:3 [S4]. Since May 28, 2025, central fill pharmacies with no patient-facing contact are exempt [S4][S5].
  • Alternative ratio (22 TAC 291.32(d)(3)(C)). A Class A pharmacy may run at 1:5 instead. It qualifies only if it dispenses no more than 20 different prescription drugs, makes no sterile preparations on site, has at least four full technicians (not trainees) in the five, and has written supervision policies [S4]. (Before the 5/28/2025 amendment this was (d)(3)(B).)
  • Technician duties (Class A). Technicians, but not trainees, may receive oral prescription orders for dangerous drugs and may transfer or receive transfers of prescription information for dangerous drugs [S4].
  • PMP. Pharmacies report Schedule II–V dispensing no later than the next business day after filling. Since March 1, 2020, pharmacists must check the PMP before dispensing opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates or carisoprodol [S6].
  • CE (22 TAC 295.8). 30 contact hours per renewal, including at least 1 hour on Texas pharmacy law or rules and a human trafficking prevention course. New pharmacists complete 2 hours on prescribing and monitoring controlled substances by the first anniversary of licensure [S7].
  • First license. TSBP says a new license is issued with a 30-day expiration, and the first renewal fee is due within those 30 days [S8].
